One of the first nights after we brought E home I laid there not being able to sleep. I was worried she would just randomly stop breathing in the middle of the night. For about a week I slept with my hand on her chest. One night I remember praying “Lord, I can’t keep doing this.”
And He said “then why are you?”

I wrestled with the why? Slowly I realized I was fearful. Fearful I would lose something so precious to me. As I leaned into that fear it only seemed to grow. Fear of this world. Fear of my own failures. Fear of the hard to explain things. The fears seemed to snowball in my brain.

This was one of the first truly refining moments in my motherhood journey, and also my spiritual journey. I never realized how I let fear guide a lot of the decisions in my life. The what ifs constantly playing in my head.

But why?

If I believe God is who He says He is then I need to walk in that truth confidently. If I believe He placed my child on earth, at this exact time, with me as their mother then I trust He will equip me. He knows their days. He knows the challenges they will face. He knows the number of hairs on their head. He loves them more than I do. What a relief.

Everyday I have a choice; what type of mother do I want to be? One who parents out of fear, or one who parents in complete faith? I want to be a mother who walks confidently, trusting God that I am called, equipped and capable to steward His children well.

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭17‬:‭7‬-‭8‬ ‭

Motherhood can be picturesque, but most of the time it’s not. It’s being brave, messy hair, constant contact, one handed eating, impulsive cleaning and growth… so much growth!! Growth physically, emotionally and spiritually. This year my goal is to share some of the growth I’m experiencing; from the little lessons I’m learning to nuggets of wisdom passed on to me. I’m gonna keep it simple and most likely sloppy. My biggest prayer is that you will be encouraged and you will see God more clearly in your motherhood journey.
